OFFENSE

After a tumultuous offseason that ultimately led to quarterback Wes Lunt transferring to Illinois, Coach Mike Gundy has still not officially named his starter. All signs point to Clint Chelf, though. Chelf, a senior, started the final five games of the season in 2012 and threw 15 touchdowns. He was named MVP of the Dallas Bowl, a 58-14 blowout of Purdue.

The fast-paced, high octave offense that we have come to know in the Gundy era will not go away under new offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich. Four wide outs spreading the defense out on every play will again be the norm. Tracey Moore, Josh Stewart, Charlie Moore and company will give Chelf an embarrassment of riches to throw to.

All Big-12 running back Joseph Randle is gone, but his replacement, Jeremy Smith has experience and 25 career touchdowns.

The Pokes averaged 46 points per game last season, and should be just as good this season.

DEFENSE

The Cowboys ranked 100th in pass defense, and 80th in total defense in 2012. Defensive coordinator Bill Young was subsequently fired. His replacement, Glenn Spencer is preaching a more aggressive approach to the defense.
Maybe the attack mode D will produce some sacks or turnovers, maybe it won’t. But things had to change from the past few years, as this defense couldn’t stop anyone.

Caleb Lavey and Shaun Lewis are two talented linebackers to build around. We’ll see what new philosophy produces. But with such an explosive offense, just a three and out here, a turnover there, could be all this unit is asked to produce.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Cornerback Justin GIlbery is dangerous kick returning, boasting five career touchdowns. Freshman Ben Grogan will handle both kicking and punting duties.

KEY PLAYERS

Clint Chelf (QB); Josh Stewart (WR); Jeremy Smith (RB).

KEY GAMES

@Mississippi State 8/31; vs TCU 10/19; @Texas 11/16; vs Oklahoma 12/7.

PREDICTION

Getting TCU and the Sooners at Boone Pickens this season is huge for the Pokes Big 12 title hopes. I will bank on an improved defense and the usual off the charts offense for Oklahoma State this year. I am thinking nine or ten wins for the Pokes. One thing I can guarantee is that, just like it has always been under Gundy, Oklahoma State games will be fun to watch.
